EHS Compliance
Compliance with all environment, health and safety (EHS) laws is imperative to our business operations worldwide. While we strive to go beyond EHS requirements wherever possible by finding innovative ways to lessen our impact on the environment and ensure the health and safety of our colleagues, Pfizer maintains full EHS compliance as its baseline commitment.
Goals and Commitments:
- To implement our EHS Policy.
- To comply fully with all applicable EHS legal and regulatory requirements.
- To adhere to Pfizer EHS Guidelines.
Programs and Actions:
- Worldwide Facility Requirements: Tracking and applying pertinent EHS legal and requlatory requirements and providing information and training to employees responsible for assuring EHS compliance.
- EHS Compliance Assurance: Routine auditing to verify and assess EHS compliance at our facilities, implementing corrective measures, and tracking progress to closure through action planning.
Performance:
Despite our efforts, on occasion, we have not met our high standard of performance.
- In 2007, Pfizer had 5 enforcement events related to various US and Puerto Rico EHS regulations resulting in fines paid totaling $6,075.
- In 2008, Pfizer paid a civil penalty of $975,000 to settle allegations by U.S. EPA that our former Groton manufacturing facility violated certain Hazardous Air Pollutant regulations (leak detection and repair requirements) between 2002 and 2005. When initially notified of the alleged violations in 2006, Pfizer acted promptly to assure the facility's compliance. Pfizer has no reason to believe and the Government never asserted that the alleged violations resulted in any environmental harm or threatened human health.
In all cases, our EHS program provided mechanisms for prompt and comprehensive corrective action, and none of the cases presented a significant risk to public health or the environment.
